This Valentine’s Day, you might be craving some chocolate from your sweetheart.Do you ever wonder why you crave something sweet or salty while your friend, partner, or family member craves the opposite?

It turns out that there is an actual science for our cravings depending on our biological makeup as well as childhood experiences with certain foods and flavors. With around 10,000 tastebuds, humans perceive four different tastes: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Studies have shown that our sense of taste actually develops in the fetus as flavors from amniotic fluids are transferred there. This can create a sensitivity and preference for certain flavors. Additionally, childhood experience with food creates a neurological memory associated with food, either positively such as receiving a cookie for good behavior or negatively such as getting sick after a cheeseburger.
